How To Get More Movement In Your Day
Who needs to be more active in their daily life?
If you said “me” as in [insert your name], then you’re absolutely correct!
Below are some ways to make more use of your legs throughout the day to help address that sedentary lifestyle of yours that you just willingly told me about.
SUGGESTIONS:
• Walk or ride your bike locally instead of driving.
• Stand while riding the bus or train instead of sitting.
• Get off the train or bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.
• Have a taxi or ride-share drop you off one or two blocks from your destination and complete the rest of the trip by walking.
• Park far away from the entrance of your destination.
• Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
• Use an under-desk elliptical.
• Get a standing desk.
• Get a walking pad.
• Make trips to the water fountain or coffee station instead of filling up your drinking vessel.
• Drink a lot of fluids to increase bathroom breaks.
• Use the bathroom on another floor or other side of the building.
• Set a timer to get up and walk for a few minutes every hour.
• Take phone calls standing or walking.
• Have walking meetings.
• Add physical activity to daily tasks.1e.g. squats while brushing your teeth, elevated push-ups on the countertop when nuking something in the microwave, lunges as you wait for the oven to heat up, stroll around the field at your kid’s soccer practice, etc.
• Play video games with gameplay that requires movement of your body.2e.g. Beat Saber, Box VR, Superhot VR, Just Dance, Nintendo Switch Sports, etc.
• Get up and move during commercial breaks.
The benefits of movement throughout the day are many.
Those benefits, however, will be minimal to your health and waistline if daily movement isn’t coupled with regular exercise. Conversely, regular exercise has its own benefits. But even if you work out every day, not doing anything the remaining 23 hours of the day can negate the benefits of that workout.
That’s why it’s important to supplement exercise with everyday movement, as they both need each other for successful completion of your health and fitness goals.
