Recommended Alcohol Intake

RECOMMENDED ALCOHOL INTAKE

At 7 calories per gram, alcohol stimulates the appetite and has a disinhibiting effect, as it impairs judgment and weakens the ability to make sound food choices. All together, when you drink, there’s the potential to take in a lot of calories from both alcohol and munchies. What’s more, because alcohol is a poison, it impedes fat burning because that process is paused while the body diverts its resources to converting alcohol into acetate so it can then get rid of it.

Given these particulars, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that alcohol makes you fat and isn’t compatible with weight management.

Research suggests that is indeed the case when it comes to binge drinking and heavy drinking, as consuming more than a fair share of alcohol on an occasion and in a day, respectively, are linked to an increased risk of obesity and an expanding waistline. Light to moderate alcohol intake, on the other hand, isn’t associated with weight gain.1It’s well-documented that regular alcohol consumption heightens the risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pancreas and liver inflammation, mood disruptions, and certain types of cancer, as well as weakening of the immune system so you’re more susceptible to frequent illness and infection. While there’s no evidence available to suggest there’s an amount of alcohol consumption that’s safe enough to avoid its attendant health effects, drinking in moderation is still the better alternative to drinking too much regularly on a single occasion or over time.

So exactly how much alcohol is enough not to risk obesity?
