Why on earth would you ever eat fucking onions?!?!, you ask incredulously.
Good question!
Onions = 🤮
Not only do onions contribute to bad breath but they also contain a type of carbohydrate called fructan, which ferments in the stomach and can cause digestive issues like gas. Both of those things certainly don’t make you more pleasant for people to be around!
So yeah, 🤮 to onions!!!
But here’s the thing…
Onions contain many compounds that have beneficial effects, one of which is quercetin. Belonging to the group of plant pigments known as flavonoids, quercetin is a nutrient that’s been linked to the prevention of an assortment of chronic conditions, some of which include heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Additionally, the evidence is strong that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of quercetin can reduce the muscle damage created by exercise and accelerate workout recovery. Those are the findings of research on humans while promise is shown in animal studies that quercetin may also help combat certain forms of cancer, protect against degenerative brain disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia, and improve testosterone production in males.
Yeah, I know, onions sound mighty, mighty tasty right about now!
