Yup, you can use the hand method by referring to the guidelines below. As to the purpose of the hand method, it can be used to build awareness of how much you eat and is particularly helpful when you want to stay mindful of what you’re eating but don’t have a scale available, such as at a party or restaurant.
GUIDELINES:
• (1) THUMB: 1-2 tbsp
One serving of nut butter, salad dressing, sour cream, cream cheese, and hard cheese.
• (1) FINGERTIP: 1 tsp
One serving of butter, margarine, mayonnaise, and oils.
• (1) FIST: 1 cup
One serving of cereal, soup, fresh fruit, raw vegetables, and salad.
• (1) PALM: 3-4 oz
One serving of fish, chicken, beef, pork, tofu, and other protein.
• (1) CUPPED HAND: 1/2 cup
One serving of nuts, raisins, beans, rice, pasta, potatoes, cooked vegetables, pudding, and ice cream.
• (2) CUPPED HAND: 1 oz
One serving of chips, crackers, and pretzels.
