Weight Loss Tip: no.399

Juice cleanses don’t work in the long run.

Care to guess why?

Yup, while consuming juice from only fruits and vegetables for a few days to several weeks might produce a loss of weight on the scale, very little, if any of it, will come from body fat. Instead, most of the lost weight will come from water because the body isn’t receiving as much sodium as it ordinarily would from foods that contain that particular nutrient that helps the body retain water. Also, all-juice diets are very low in calories and provide little protein by virtue of produce not containing much of that nutrient. That’s of significance because the longer you go without providing the body with an adequate amount of calories and protein, the more muscle the body will use to fuel itself to make up for the shortfall in nutrition. For one or both of these outlined reasons, any weight that’s lost during a juice cleanse is almost guaranteed to be regained once a person resumes a normal eating pattern with a higher calorie intake, as the reintroduction of sodium will increase water weight and the body will burn less daily calories due to the loss of muscle.
