Weight Loss Tip: no.578

Any calculation of the amount of calories you need to eat to lose weight isn’t going to be 100 percent accurate, so you need to make adjustments as necessary.

Care to guess why?

Yup, what you should do is eat the prescribed number of calories for 2-3 weeks and if the scale doesn’t move in the desired direction, then reduce the amount of calories by no more than 10 percent. After that, allow the change another 2-3 weeks before making another adjustment, if necessary.

As for why the numerous methods to determine calorie needs aren’t accurate, it’s because not all of them consider the various factors that influence the body’s energy needs, such as age, height, weight, body fat percentage, and activity level, for instance. The more variables that are entered into the equation the more approximate the output will be but it still won’t be exact to your individual person because each procedure for the calculation of your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is formulated on a population-wide level not specific to your particular body. As such, it should be remembered that whatever process is used to determine calorie intake is nothing more than an estimate rather than a precise figure.
